About Split


Split is the largest city on the Dalmatian coast and the main gateway to the islands of Brač, Hvar, Šolta and Vis. Its old town grew inside Diocletian's Palace, built by a Roman emperor around 300 AD and listed by UNESCO since 1979. Today people still live, shop and eat inside the palace walls. In summer the centre is busy, which is why many guests prefer a villa with a pool outside the city and come into Split for dinner or a morning walk along the Riva.


Where to Stay Around Split


Podstrana

About 10 km south-east of the city, with a long seafront promenade, beaches and quick access to Split. A good choice for families and large groups who want the sea and the city within easy reach. Read our guide to Podstrana.

Kaštela

A string of seven small seaside villages between Split and Trogir, each grown around an old castle. Calmer than Split, with the airport only a few minutes away, which makes it convenient for arrivals and departures.

Trogir and Seget

Trogir is a small medieval town on an island, listed by UNESCO, about 25 km west of Split. Seget, right next to it, has quieter villas with sea views and easy access to the island of Čiovo.

Solin

Just behind Split, home to the ruins of ancient Salona, once one of the largest Roman cities on the Adriatic.

Is it better to stay in Split or near Split?

Staying in the old town puts you within walking distance of Diocletian's Palace, restaurants and the ferry port. Villas with private pools are almost all outside the centre, in Podstrana, Kaštela or Trogir, where you get more space, parking and quieter evenings, with Split a short drive away.

How far is Split Airport from the villas?

Split Airport is in Kaštela, west of the city. Villas in Kaštela, Trogir and Seget are closest, often only a few minutes away, while Podstrana is on the other side of Split, about 40 minutes by car outside peak traffic.

Can I visit the islands from a villa near Split?

Yes. Ferries and catamarans leave Split for Brač, Hvar, Šolta and Vis. The car ferry to Supetar on Brač takes about 50 minutes, so day trips are easy.

Are villas near Split suitable for large groups?
